Facebook page administrators – read the Facebook page guidelines

Modern Marketing

As all Facebook pages get timeline by March 30th, 2012, Facebook has updated Facebook page guidelines.  Key things to note are the following:

  • Proper use of the Facebook page “Cover.”  Facebook is prohibiting the page owners to use Facebook page cover for advertising any discounts etc or contact info. This could be an issue for Facebook pages that use a Welcome tab to provide marketing messages.
  • Third party ads are not allowed on pages. It seems like this restriction is for the pages only and ads may be allowed to run on applications.
  • Restrictions around running Promotions – While these promotion terms didn’t change, it is always useful to refresh.  Facebook wants page owners to use Apps to run promotions. In addition, the page owners cannot restrict the entry to any specific user set based on previous actions like liking a post or commenting on a post. In addition, the page owners cannot automatically enter users into the sweepstakes or contests. Another policy is to prohibit Facebook actions like Like or Share to be the entry requirements.

Here is the post on Facebook:

We recently updated the Pages Terms to make it more clear what is and isn’t allowed when you use our Pages product. Please take a moment to read and understand the full terms available here: Facebook Guidelines. Notable changes include:
1. New polices for cover photos and the Offers product
2. We merged the Promotions Guidelines into the Pages Terms. There are no substantive changes to our Promotion Guidelines, only the location was changed, but we encourage you to check out what is or isn’t allowed if you’re running a contest, sweepstakes, etc.
3. Reminders that third party ads are prohibited on Pages. The only appropriate method for collecting data from users is through our platform (e.g. scraping is prohibited).
4. All content created on Pages and boosted as an ad or sponsored story is subject to both the Page Terms and Ad Guidelines.
5. Generic terms for Page names are not allowed (e.g. “Pizza”).
